An interactive, breast imaging-pathology master class featuring the site of origin of breast cancer. Implications for surgery and treatment planning-Atlanta, GA

DESCRIPTION

Course schedule ATLANTA, GA 2020

  • Close cooperation between radiologists, surgeons, pathologists and oncologists has always been very important: in the era of mammography screening and early detection of breast cancer – it became vital! Effective breast cancer management requires dedication and continuous cooperation on the part of the diagnostic and therapeutic teams.
  • Drs. Tucker and Tabár challenge outdated terminology in interactive lectures, when both speakers are simultaneously at the podium, as they would act at a weekly tumor board, constantly challenging each other, promoting a better understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the imaging methods and the currently used histopathology technique.
  • At this course Lee Tucker, MD, breast pathologist and László Tabár, MD, breast radiologist reveal the inconsistencies of the current breast cancer terminology and describe in interactive radiology-pathology lectures why breast cancer terminology should be based upon the site of tumor origin. The lecturers use large format, subgross histopathology images correlated with breast imaging findings and long-term (25-year) survival curves of various breast cancer subtypes to support their proposals for introducing a more rational terminology.
  • The current breast cancer terminology could be improved by modeling it after the method of classifying prostate cancer to reflect the anatomic site of breast cancer origin which correlate with patient outcome: acinar adenocarcinoma of the breast (AAB), ductal adenocarcinoma of the breast (DAB) and breast cancer of mesenchymal origin.
  • The course will give practical advice: How and why to build an imaging-centric large-format breast pathology program.
  • The lectures on each major subject will be followed by interactive screening sessions consisting of a mixture of normal and early cancer cases presented on the large screen exactly as they appear on a viewing station at screening. Using a specially designed polling program downloaded to each participant’s smartphone or tablet, the attendees will be asked to vote anonymously on each case. The aggregate results will appear instantly for discussion and evaluation.

This course is conducted in English.
